Three Basic Tips for Improving Organic Search Rankings
Looking for a few easy ways to improve organic search results, aka. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? Try these three things first:
Analyze web traffic
The first thing we do before we ever start any SEO campaign with a client is analyze their current web traffic. We believe in this so strongly, it’s even one of our core pillars (or what makes us stand as a company): mobilize data. Because in order to know where you‚Äôre going, you have to know where you‚Äôve been.
Analyze how and why people are reaching your website. Are they coming directly? From referrals? From search engines? From social? Where are your regular visitors from geographically? What pages are most popular? What days do you receive the most traffic? If you can’t answer those questions, don‚Äôt start messing with anything. Set some benchmarks so you can begin to create some goals.
Create unique, accurate page titles
Describe what your page is all about in the page’s title tag. Use relevant language that your audience would search for. Do not use the same title for every page. The content of these show up in the first line of organic search results – helping your audience (and search engines) figure out if the page is relevant to their search.
Here is a coded example of a good title tag (remember, this should be placed inside your <head></head> tags):
<title>Rare Skateboard Decks, Custom Skateboard Designs – Joe’s Skateboarding</title>
Make use of the description meta tag
The description meta tag gives search engines a summary of what the page is about. Provide description meta for each page. Make sure these are also relevant. These may also show up in organic search results as the second line of text.
Here is a coded example of a good description meta tag (remember, this also should be placed inside your <head></head> tags):
<meta name=”description” content=”Joe’s Skateboarding provides the widest variety of rare and custom skateboard decks. We offer free shipping on all orders.”>
These three tips aren’t the end all of improving your search engine rankings, but they definitely are a start (and they‚Äôre easy). If you have any questions about these or other search engine optimization techniques, feel free to contact us or leave a comment.
